Co-occurring Mental Health Problems

  • An important feature of assessing ADHD in an adult is to consider if they are experiencing a co-occurring or co-morbid mental health problem as well as their ADHD.
  • The clinician needs to assess if mental health problems the person is experiencing are because of their ADHD or a different condition, as there are often a lot of overlapping symptoms. This is important for the intervention plan.
  • Around two thirds of adults with ADHD will also experience a co-occurring mental health condition.

The most common co-occurring conditions are:

  • Anxiety
  • Mood symptoms (such as depression or extreme mood swings)
  • Addiction
  • Eating disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Self-harm behaviours
  • Sleep disorders
